vorzubereiten.
Fragen an Herrn Prof.
Dr. Seidel:
Was hat Sie motiviert, elektronische
Tests bereitzustellen?
Begonnen
In
beitragen konnten.

Digital teachings and learning in an academic context – example of good practice “E-Tests”
The stated examples
of good practice show possibilities of implementing digital media in lectures of
higher academic institutions in Saxony. Herewith, teachers/research assistants tell
about advantages of their experiences as well as difficulties they had to deal
with. All published interviews are taken from the project „New culture of teachings
and learning for digitalisation of higher academic institutions “. The project
ran form 09/2015 till 12/2016.
In today's
post, we are taking up the e-tests of professor Dr. Seidel (department of
mathematics at the West Saxon University of Applied Sciences of Zwickau). The e-tests
that he has set up were made available to students for their self-study. Especially
with regard to preparing themselves for the final semester exam, 90% of the
students took part in the e-tests and herewith, they also took advantage of the
opportunity to prepare themselves individually and independently.
Questions to Prof. Dr. Seidel:
What motivated you to provide e-tests? It is of great importance to me
that our first-year students actively and confidently design their education
and learn to assess their abilities and deficits by themselves. The most common
and also tested instrument for this purpose are regular homework that can be
controlled by (student) staff. Unfortunately, this is quite difficult to
implement due to personnel reasons here at the West Saxon University of Applied
Sciences in Zwickau. By connecting the MAXIMA computer algebraic system to the
ONYX test suite, calculations, formulas, randomized and individualized tasks,
etc. can be created, always with the possibility of using the automated
evaluation and feedback of responses. Even the consideration and appropriate
assessment of consequential errors is nowadays possible without problems.
How are the electronic tests integrated into
the overall concept of your course? We started with regular, voluntary e-tests
during the semester to encourage the students to continuously study, practice
and check their learning success by themselves. In some lectures/modules at the West
Saxon University of Applied Sciences, electronic tests are now mandatory as a
preliminary examination for all students of these courses. In the lectures/modules that I´m
teaching in, e-tests are still voluntary. However, students can earn bonus
points for the exam by successfully completing the tests.
How many students use this offer? The electronic tests are used in
the maths lectures/modules of the first and second semester. Last
winter and summer semesters, more than 90 percent of the students took the
tests as part of their preparation for the final exam.
How are you networked in your development
activities? A key
success factor was and still is the cooperation with various colleagues at the
West Saxony University of Applied Sciences here in Zwickau and also at other
universities in Saxony within the framework of the Mathematics/Physics and
E-Learning working group. The focus of the framework and the working group can
be seen in the development and maintenance of a task pool for electronic tests,
that is available to all universities in Saxony, and from which we can all
benefit. Its variety and wide range of tasks is very positive and we have the
opportunity to contribute in it through our own developments.
